GHS - CLP Regulation
The United Nations Globally Harmonized System (UN GHS) has set a new regulation on Classification, Labeling and Packaging of substances and mixtures, (Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 “CLP Regulation" or “CLP") which entered into force on 20th January 2009.
The GHS provides a basis for globally uniform physical, environmental, health and safety information on hazardous chemicals. It was developed at UN level with the aim of overcoming differing labeling information requirements on physical, health and environmental hazards for the same chemicals around the world.
The implementation of GHS has significant effects on handling chemicals and their CLP;
Hazard classes,
Hazard categories,
Hazard pictograms,
Signal words,
Hazard statements,
Precautionary statements.
Transitional timeframes were set by UN GHS defining essentially two target dates that affect the classification, hazard communication and packaging of hazardous substances and mixtures, namely 1st December 2010 and 1st June 2015, respectively.
Additional two years are granted for re-labeling and re-packaging of substances and mixtures which are already in the supply chain (“on the shelves") by these dates.
